However, it is worth researching the history of engagement rings to get some extra information before purchasing. A more informed decision always leads to a better decision in the long run. On our blog, we have already provided a brief history of engagement rings and considered the symbolism behind them. We are now going to have a quick look at diamond engagement rings and see why they have become the classic choice.
While the first confirmed engagement rings appeared more than two millennia ago, the first diamond engagement rings didn’t appear until hundreds of years later. While a less romantic proposal than the modern Glasgow iteration, the first recorded proposal with a diamond engagement ring was still more sentimental than the Roman version. It was at least a business proposal rather than a declaration of ownership. Maximilian of Austria gifted Mary of Burgundy a diamond ring in 1477. According to the Jewellery Industry Council, this is the first instance of a proposal with a diamond ring and is what set the precedent for it among European nobility.
When diamonds were discovered in South Africa during the Victorian era, diamond engagement rings became even more common. However, they were still mostly reserved for the aristocracy. This slowly changed throughout the 19th and 20th century and diamond engagement rings began to become more accessible, but they didn’t particularly have a boom in popularity until 1947. During this time a giant in the diamond mining industry by the name of De Beers, began using the phrase, “A Diamond is Forever” in a hugely successful marketing campaign. From that point on, diamond engagement rings became the most popular and common type of engagement ring. The popularity of diamond engagement rings has only increased throughout the twenty-first century, which is why we specialise in diamond engagement rings for Glasgow clients.
